and yet i know several people with D300s and D7000s that would buy a D400; I don't know a single person with a D600 or anyone who wants one. The high end DX market is shrinking because there's no new product for anyone to buy
A lot of the blame goes to the 5DmII. It was fairly cheap for what you got and even disrupted Canon's full frame pricing scheme. While the 1D and 1Ds ruled the high end pro market at one time, the 5DmII muscled into the wedding-pro (and weekend-pro) market that used to belong to the D200/D300. So now if you earn a living with your camera, the game has moved on, it's all about full frame. (Well, that and videography, but trying to keep this simple.)
So what used to be the D300 crowd is now split between the D7000 and D700/D800.... basically the paid and un-paid crowd (or those who can write off their purchases and those who can't). I think that the situation gets a bit muddled with the D600, because the D600 isn't enough camera for the paid crowd, but is too expensive a proposition for the unpaid crowd.
The longer we go like this, the more that I think that the D7xxx series is it for high-end DX. You can only split the pie so many ways. Remember, for a very brief period of time, the pro cameras in Nikon's lineup were the D3 and D300... this was before the D700. That crowd is now split between the D4, D800, D600 and some of the D7000. Adding a D400 into the mix when the camera market (and consumer electronics in general) is not doing so well might not be the best at the moment.
All the people I know that were shooting a d300 before the D800 came out are still shooting it. I know 5 people with a full frame, only 2 of them are current models and the person that owns the D800 would do just as well with a D7000.
Unless they knock about $1000 off the current full frame cameras, they are going to continue to make up a small portion of the cameras that Nikon sells. How many people are going to spend $800-$1000 more to get a full frame sensor in a low end camera? Those cameras sell because they're cheap and people will put up with the reduced features set for the low price. Who is going to want a D5x00 with a FF sensor in it for $1800? $1500? Nobody I know. The forums are already full of people crying about "crippled" cameras.
FF cameras are the emperor's new clothes. Only so many people are going to buy them and they'll quickly realize that they spent 2-3 times more money as a DX setup and aren't getting any better results. Cameras are getting "good enough" for most people, who's going to be left to buy the next round of FX cameras? Pretty much just well off people that buy them more as a status symbol, the ones that you see on craigs list selling a D700 with 2000 actuations for $1400 because they just bought a D800.
