Question about the MB-D12 battery grip

Yes - both power supplies are independent of each other and the camera will function with both or either. The MB-D12 comes with both AA and EN-EL15 adapters - so you can actually hot swap between them. You can also choose which source to drain first (internal or grip) if you have them both installed.
