Don't know the 35mm equiv but I'd suggest a 35mm equiv of 26 to 100mm and have macro capapilities of possibly a close-up lens adapter. If you're hiking you need to watch the weight.

I'm a Canon shooter and bought a Pana FZ150 after a co-worker got one for Christmas and it has 26-600mm equiv and also macro and RAW. It's between a P&S and DSLR and the newer model is FZ-200 and the main change is 2.8 constant. It makes great photos and you may want to consider it. It's light and makes great photos and I use it for long hikes.
