Focus is about 7 feet behind the dog it seems.
You are so right. I am having a bear of a time trying to get some decent action shots. Tried Sport mode, cranking up ISO so I could use greater depth of field... No joy so far, and very frustrating.
I'm interested to hear that, as I have posted about the same issues but with an older E-P1 and the dog-slow 100-300 Panasonic. I've been assured that modern cameras are much better at AF, but perhaps this isn't the case, and people aren't really using AF on relatively fast moving subjects. If the E-M5 can't cope, I doubt any other (m4/3) camera will.
I wouldn't rate your subjects as particularly fast, either - chunky dogs in snow, vs greyhounds on the the beach
