I use Viewer 2 to recover highlights. In the RAW developer, you can click an icon to find overexposed portions of the photo and make them blink. (There's another icon for underexposed portions, but underexposure isn't so often a problem.) If I have significant overexposure, I reduce the exposure setting. I get a lot of highlight recovery that way.
