Hi John, All I’m trying to do is show that the 6D can be a good camera for birding. Your photos are very nice, but in a situation where the 6D probably won’t shine, I’m talking about birding. I’m not talking about tracking either, although lots of other people are, I imagine you’re right, the 6d tracks about as well  as most of the other Canon DSLR’s. And since this is only second time I was out with the 6D, I hope to improve,  I’ve taken much better photos with my 40D, it’s just easier with the 6D. These are only first examples from Wednesday, not photos I’ve been saving for years .

But what I am trying to say, is that the 6D has some pretty startling improvements for birders. And they’re all about the centre-point, which is what I use. Low light focusing is one of them, birders are out at dawn in poor light, the improvement of the centre-point there is major. The last photo is taken just after sunrise, on a bird going fast and low against dark water, it was also with a 1.4 teleconverter on the lens (400/5.)   I’m pretty sure I couldn’t have got that shot with the 40D. Another major improvement is teleconverter performance, again especially useful for birders who use them. I suddenly find myself with a 1.4Xteleconverter/lens combination that really works, and a 2X teleconverter  that could be used in a pinch. Finally there is the ability to distinguish the subject from a messy background, even thought I think this is to do with full-frame,  the sensitive centre-point is I think, helping a lot here.

I can only compare with the 40d, because that’s what I have,  I expected it to be good, but it exceeds my expectations. Please excuse my enthusiasm!

/Neil
