Why 35mm, why f1.4?

Hi everyone,

I need a 35mm 1.4 for my Nikon D800 (or alternatively 50mm 1.4 if advantages are obvious) for a scientific project. The main criteria, in additional to sharpness, are:

Why 35mm? Any reason for that? Apparently not, since you think of 50mm too?

Why f1.4? Any reason to think of such a large aperture? Diffraction softening should only set in past f4/5.6...

1. Focus field flatness

The wider the lens, the more chance for focus curvature.

2. AF accuracy centre-frame

What kind of scientific project is it? MF will give better focus consistency.

For this project, I will be taking pictures of low contrast objects at near distance, probably 0.3-0.5m. I need the "entire" frame to be captured in "perfect" focus left-right (top-down less important).

Focal length determines the distance. So again, why 35mm? Unless that has a real reason, I would think that you'd even be better served with a 1960's Nikkor 55mm f3.5 micro, pre-Ai, MF lens.

I've been eyeing the Sigma 35mm 1.4, but haven't been able to figure out much regarding the focus field on this lens. 35mm is the ideal focal lenght, but I can consider going to 50mm if the focus field is significantly improved.

All help appreciated!

Cheers,

Andreas
