The position (latitude & longitude) information are stored in EXIF fields as part of your JPG or RAW files, just like the shutter speed, f-stop, ISO, date/time, etc.

Some 3rd party SW applications can read the location information and display it on a map.

In addition, the track can be logged and stored.  There are applications that display the path you traveled and where photos were taken.

I use Lightroom 4's Map module.
