My only beef with the Sigma is that I think it tends to underexpose by about .7EV in many circumstances. No big deal, but it is just worth noting.
The contrast from the Sigma is better than the Nikon, the Nikon seems a little more muted in comparison.
If I were to buy my first 35mm f1.4 lens, the Sigma would be hard to beat, in fact I would probably buy it over the Nikon if I had not purchased the Nikon first up. As I had purchased the Nikon first and then added the Sigma, I am not sure which I will keep and sell off. I am probably going to sell off the Nikon as the Sigma is the sharper of the two at the wide open apertures. I can't really fault anotherMike's review in this same thread or his subsequent thoughts and responses to other posters:
I'll admit it's kind of hard arguing with someone who actually has the product (Nikon 35), but from all the reviews and reports I've read just about all say the Sigma 35 a better lens than Nikon's version
And looking further into your post, though you initially say the Nikon is better, you not only give Sigma more points, but you say if you had to do it all over again, you'd get the Sigma.
With that, I'm wondering how you then say "Overall, I think the Nikon is slightly better"?
I meant slightly better with regards to bokeh. Overall, I think the Sigma is a better lens.
Unfortunately, you have taken a small excerpt from my 2nd paragraph which was discussing the bokeh aspect of the lens.
"As far as bokeh is concerned, it depends on the scene, the background, how close you are to the main subject, where you are focusing and what aperture you are using. Overall, I think the Nikon is slightly better, but the Sigma is still excellent and in certain conditions I think the Sigma has a slight edge and in other conditions the Nikon is better. I still haven't evaluated what those conditions are, just that sometimes the Sigma has a slight edge and in others the Nikon has the slight edge."
Maybe I should have said in the second sentence, "Overall for bokeh, think the Nikon is slightly better, but the Sigma is still excellent and in certain conditions I think the Sigma has a slight edge and in other conditions the Nikon is better. I still haven't evaluated what those conditions are, just that sometimes the Sigma has a slight edge and in others the Nikon has the slight edge."
However, in my defence, as this paragraph was dealing with bokeh, I didn't think I needed to keep saying bokeh in each sentence. My schooling always told me that you start a new paragraph when dealing with a new subject matter and as I was still on about bokeh, I stayed in the same paragraph.
The first paragraph dealt with sharpness:
"I have both the Sigma 35 f1.4 DG HSM and the Nikon 35mm f1.4G, both are superb lenses. However, the Sigma is sharper, especially at the wide open apertures, but by f2.8 to f4 they are close and both are excellent."
Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks.

Yeah I see now I missed the bokah part of that paragraph. Thanks for clarifying. Sorry.
That said, some are acting like the bokah on the Sigma 35 is horrid, which it isn't. And for its overall performance, and being half the price of the Nikon, I can live with its slightly less than (perceived) pristine bokah.
No matter how you cut it, it's still a great lens. Sigma simply got this one right.
