Concerned about JPEG quality. Is my RX100 faulty?
Feb 14, 2013

Hi,

I like this camera very much. However I got recently worried about quality of JPEGs it produces in A or S mode. Putting it in A (which I usually use), setting ISO over 200 and awful noise is guaranteed.

Here are some samples gathered:

I have taken 6 pictures: ISO200-1600, auto in Superior mode (produced ISO800 image), and RAW ISO1600, processed afterwards in PS CS6 ACR with default settings.

Please find originals on my Flickr set http://www.flickr.com/photos/55891808@N04/sets/72157632765517397/

Here is a sample of the same scene - a frame from video shot on ISO1600. It is even worse than JPEG ISO1600.

In JPEGs I am finding awful blue/yellow noise in dark areas of the images, starting from ISO400. Superior Auto naturally produced pretty nice smooth image (stacking multiple exposures), and RAW gave more noisy image, but I like noise in this case.

It turns out to me that "normal" JPEG (outside superior auto or HDR mode) is pretty shitty and useless for me. Is your experience the same? Or my RX100 is faulty?
