D800E lens strategy - will this work?

I'm planning to go FX from a D300 and the target is the D800E.

But instead of buying trinity zooms (I would opt for the 70-300VR for its size anyway), I'm planning to use the D800E in DX mode with my existing 12-24DX and the 16-85VR zooms just to "get the shot" and reach for IQ skies with top primes like the Zeiss 21/2.8, the Nikon 24/1.4 or 85/1.4. (I'm leaving the new Sigma 35/1.4 out because I'm a bokeh freak).

Is anybody doing something similar and do you think this can be a satisfying solution?
