If I focus and recompose I prefer to do it with the closest AF point as well to avoid shifting the plane of focus to far.

Agree..

Particularly when dealing with a shallow depth of field. Focus on the eyes then recompose could change the focus plane from the eyes when you rotate to recompose. Using outer focus points comes in handy.
