What does the rule of thirds have to do with the AF spread on any DSLR? That's a rhetorical question. And the answer is not much. Stabbing in the dark since I do not have the benefit of the particular reviews in question but focus and recompose is probably what the reviews are referring to. Since you will recompose anyway, you might as well use the best AF point which is the center one. Or you can crop. Seems to me that the reviews don't have a lot of confidence in the non-center AF points. If you are a big PDAF shooter, you might want to reconsider the purchase of this camera. Maybe consider the 5D3.

30+ years ago I got into photography with Nikon FE and FM cameras. You had to focus manually and you worked with what amounted to a center focus. You can't teach old dogs new tricks so I still like a center focus point. The 6D is perfect for me. Personally I can't figure out what to do with all of those extra focus points. So I can't understand what all the fuss is about when we talk about lack of 6D focus points.

It took me two years to figure out the focus points on my 7D.
