From all I've seen, the 1.4x adapter cause some reduction in image quality and with only one stop loss of light, but the 2x adapter should be reserved for times when there really isn't any other option.

It might be worth considering a 1.4x adapter (giving you almost 300mm) but I'd stay away from the 2x.
