Lens for Everday

I just received my new camera (Nikon D90) and two lenses. The lenses I bought are the 85mm f/1.8 and the Nikkor AF-S VR 55-300. I need a good lens to use on a day to day basis for photographing my kids and just daily simple stuff. I received such great advice on here last time thought I would try it again! So which lens would you suggest as an everyday of the week lens?
