If I was a payed photo professional, doing either event shooting, sports, nature or fashion shoots, a camera with maximum speed, precision and control would be a must. But if you are just an hobbyist or an amateur, do you still feel motivated to haul around a big DSLR with lenses all day?

Well, I think you gave the hint to answer your own question when you apparently admited for some kind of photography, DSLRs are the best tool for their speed, precision and control.

The point is most of the time, my needs are similar to that professionals you mentioned previously. When I do not need them, when my main focus is something else than photography, I can cope with a light P&S (Nikon P7100) or even my mobile.
