Raptor, how would you state a rule that limits PP to only that which leaves a natural looking photo, one that does not show any sign of having been processed, except, of course, to experts.

It's incredibly difficult and is something I have considered before. Can you define "a natural looking photo" ? it's not easy.

What is the aim of the rule in the first place ? that should be the first question, if the aim is to get an image that shows the scene that the photographer was trying to capture and that faithfully reproduces that scene then that is what needs to be stated.

A rule that states this does not exclude PP, it just excludes bad PP (overdone PP is bad PP).

PP that is done well is not noticeable, IMO so why exclude it ? just to maintain a level playing field with those that do not or can not PP ?

When setting rules a Host has to examine not only what they want the rules to do but why they want the rules to do it, not only method behind the rules but also motivation. Considering the motivation will often lead to a better rule.

Thanks for the reply. As you know there is a section in the rules of a challenge called "Processing Rules:". In spite of all the discussions in this forum I see many halfhearted, largely ineffective attempts by hosts to limit the extent of processing. Some seem to think it is futile to even try, and just say no restrictions. Then there are those who don't even want to be bothered.  I think most hosts want to be reasonable and make it clear what the limits are.

I am hoping that some suggestions for effective processing rules might come out of this discussion, suggestions that would benefit the hosts who do want to set some limits.

Some of the key points I have gotten from this discussion are:

1. Everyone agrees post processing is needed with images taken with a DSLR.

2. Post processing includes any done by the camera plus that done by the photographer.

3. As you say, Raptor, the host needs to decide exactly what it is she or he wants to control and then state it clearly, not just throw out a couple of words. Once she or he gets it right they can paste it in for the processing rule.

4. If they want to stick to few words then the most effective is probably, "no noticeable PP", if that is what they want.

5. If a natural photo (yeah, I know) is what they want, then as you suggested, they could say "the image should faithfully reproduce the scene as seen by the photographer".

The host rules his roost. If she or he says their rule is violated and the entrant doesn't agree then discuss it with the host, not in the forum. Let's not give those hosts who actually try to enforce their rules a hard time. Remember the host's decision is final and you don't have to enter challenges by that host if you don't like the way they run their challenges.
