Shoot tight – crop tighter?

Is there a do's and don'ts for shooting and cropping sports photos? How close do you shoot and or crop? For example, I have a photo of a player(s). The ref is in the background as is the fans. Do you crop the head off the ref, etc. As they are not what is in focus?

Then what size do you crop at? and what about cropping limbs?
