There is clearly a lot of sample variation with the 28-300VR.  That's one reason that you will find a lot of conflicting reviews and samples.

If you get a good one (I got one on my second attempt; the first copy was truly awful), it can be pixel sharp on a 12 MPixel sensor (D3/D700), even at 300mm and f/5.6.  Mine is sharp to about 18 Mpixels, so it is not pixel sharp on a D600 (24 MPixels).  My best example of the D700 (same sensor as D3) + 28-300VR at 300mm, f/5.6 is:
