I really think that Canon canned the articulated screen sometime after the initial design process. The back simply screams hinge - there was really no compelling reason to have the button layout that way for any other reason. Possibly it would drive the cost higher than they wanted, I hate to think they just decided to start stripping features just because they could.

Although sadly, it does feel like that's exactly what they did in some cases.

Funny, the one thing I was totally ambivalent about with my 60D when I got it has become one of my favorite features. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a greasy nose!
