I'm a telephoto "junkie" so HAVE to have IS. Plus long reach lenses are not just for picture taking as I live on a fishing lake and want to keep track of the boating action to see fish caught and if there are any friends out. I used to drool over Canon IS binoculars, but don't need those expensive optics as my IS camera lens is also my snooper scope!

For up to moderate telephoto I'd say IS would not be a necessity unless you often shoot in dim light.
