Which Nikon DSLR is good for bird photography

I think you mean high ISO capability or low light? In any case, as far as I know, the D300 and D300s are the same in this respect. However, I do agree that autofocus is exceptionally fast and accurate on the D300/s and yes, this is very important for bird photography and I would recommend a secondhand D300 over a brand new copy of a newer model of a different kind any day.

On the other hand, my now 9-year old D70 does pretty well:
