Maybe my fingers are longer than some, but I simply stick my hand down inside the hood and rotate the filter with my finger tips. Try snagging the knurling on the filter ring with your fingernail if needed. It helps that the hood is petal shaped on the 70-200 so I utilize the notch. It is harder, but still doable, on the 100-400 with a much deeper hood.
ditto. That's how I do it with my 70-200/2.8L. The corner cuts of the tulip shape help.
However, upon further review I see the ET-87 hood of the IS II is a little deeper than the ET-83 of my non-IS.
The bowl of the 70-200/4L and 70-300/4-5.6L are more problematic.
