I know exactly what you mean and I am drawn to the RX100 for the exact same reasons you state.
I am only an amateur but I've wanted a DSLR or mirrorless forever. I thought I'd start with the Rebel T4i and actually purchased one but there were too many issues with it - and not just with it but with the inconvenience of it.
I have a 10 month old baby. I am usually carrying him when we are out and about. I am only human and can only carry so much! I also have an 8 year old daughter who I am always running from activity to activity. I found that many times I would just run off without my camera because either I would forget it, I had no place for it, I didn't want another thing to carry, or some other reason. It just was not practical for me. As much as I have the desire to learn all about the depths of photography right now - I just don't have time for it - and my precious moments are vanishing as my camera sat lonely in its bag by my door!
Well - I returned the camera last week. I expect to receive a refund within the next couple days. I wanted a camera that would give me good shots - family stuff mostly - realistically. Sure, the inner me dreams of going out and capturing more artistic images, but I think the time and dedication that would take is just not available to me - right now. So I am going to go with the RX100.
I love that I can just pop it in my purse and get the quality I am seeing in sample photos. Plus have the flexibility of all of the settings it has. I think I'll be really happy with it.
I DO tend on splurging on a DSLR later in life. Maybe 5 years from now or so when I am allowed enough free time to have a hobby again. That should give me plenty of time to save. And then I'll just have this amazing little camera as my take with me anywhere camera.
I think many photographers have a smaller P&S for the same reasons. As fun as it is to sometimes take out your DSLR, it just isn't always practical - especially if you are toting small children with you.
