Depth of Field Question
Feb 13, 2013

I had a question on DOF I was hoping someone could help with.  I understand the concept and what affects it (aperture, focal length, distance to subject).  I shoot a lot of landscape photography.  Typically, when you think of landscape, people would say to use a small aperture to get that large depth of field.

I'm a little confused because typically when you are shooting landscape, your subject is far in the distance.  So, because of that distance does the F-Stop have any impact (only with respect to depth of field)?

For example, say I have a landscape with one rock a few feet from me and a another rock far in the distance.  If I were to focus on the rock a few feet from me I would need a high f-stop so that both rocks would be in focus.

However, if I focused on the rock in the distance and used a small f-stop, would both rocks still be in focus? Would the picture look the same?

Any help would be great.

This question has not been answered yet.
