I just bought a brand new Nikon V1 with the kit lens for $300 and that seems to be the going price. On BHPhoto the 2 lens kit is going for $399 new with free shipping (and possibly free tax depending on the destination). I can't help but think the V1 (body only) would be no more than $250. The FT-1 can be had for about $175 on eBay. Add those together and you have a powerful zoom of up to 810mm for $425 with a sensor that is considerably larger than any consumer compact, superzoom, and camcorder (assuming you already have a 300mm consumer zoom lens). If she doesn't have a zoom, the 55-300 (which can be had for a bit over $200) is relatively cheap. All told, about $600 is not bad considering the capabilities it offers. There are compromises, but you can probably live with them considering what you gain. Or, just go with a superzoom; the Nikon p510 is surpisingly good all things considered. It's probably not up to pixel peeping standards, but regular size prints are probably fine.
