Think I'd recommend a 3200 or 5200 here -- crop sensor is good for what essentially nets you an extra 50% zoom, and the generous megapixel count means you can crop crop crop away. I bought  the 5200 for shooting small dogs which while not quite as demanding, does share some similarities.

I use the Nikkor 55-300 for my shooting which has served me well and is reasonably priced at $400, although from what I understand the 70-300 is better for some reason. I've heard great things about Tamron's 70-300 but good Lord that thing is like twice the weight!
