Filter or No Filter???

I’ve experienced dropping a medium format lens on asphalt with a filter mounted on it. The filter was ruined but there was no detection of damage to the lens. That, a few minor incidences and external wear was reinforcement enough for me to maintain filters. Although I normally purchase upper end filters, like Sammy I’m prone to wiping a filter with my sleeve to get the shot but I wouldn’t do that with a lens element!!!
