Thinking of getting a S100. They seem to be at a good price on Amazon. Is there anyway to avoid / request so that I do not get a serial number that starts with 29 through 41? Those are the ones that canon claims to be affected with the widespread lens issue. Is the serial number known only after opening the box (there are some local ads that say "new in the box").

Thanks

Look a the serial number and if it's not in the following range it won't have the issue.

From Canon   "The first and second digits of the camera’s serial number are any number from"29" through"41."
For example: "29xxxxxxxxxx", "30xxxxxxxxxx"………"41xxxxxxxxxx"

It was an issue with one of the parts in the lens that was only used on camera's with above serial number range and replaced with a good part starting with serial number 42xxxxx....
