To be honest, no camera is going to be perfect in this situation. If the dog is running directly towards the camera, the focus needs to change at the fastest rate. You can help things by stopping down a bit (to f5.6 or f8.0) to give more room for error.

Also the closer the dog is, the harder it is to track because the DOF gets much thinner as the dog gets closer. You can see that on the focus ring of your lens which will equire a larger turn to focus between two closer points than it does at a distance. You'll have better results from further distances
