Hopefully this isn't a sign that the HS50 is going to come with early production defects but it's available at Amazon for $429. I was going to wait unitil the price came down but this is low enough for me to take a shot. There's a 30 day return policy if there's a droopy lens or some other type of problem.

There is no upside whatsoever to pre-ordering. Its just a way for suppliers to lock you in to high prices that will quickly start to slide as soon as the product ships.

Agreed .... That being said.. hopefully by next month I can begin testing m own HS50 against my pocket rocket. I hope the HS50 comes out on top.

For you EXR users out there. My first test will be head to head lens IQ.

I'll be shooting in broad full daylight at base ISO with maximum resolution set.

What EXR settings should I be using?

Nikon AF - One Shot ..... One Kill

Shoot HS50 in JPEG+RAW. JPEG being set to the ff:

- NR Lowest

- Sharpness lowest

- Color and Tones Standard

- DR100

- L Size

- IS off if on a tripod

- Equalize setting of 2nd camera to 1st in Manual Mode

Those are good enough for a static shootout. Don't attempt to do action shootout coz your p510 will eat mud and not just dust.

My settings will be:

JPEG settings, forget RAW

EXR daylight dynamic range preference, low light, flash low light preference.

NR HIGH (yes high, there is no loss in fine detail. Tested on recent HS30)

Sharpness low (don't know if there is intelligent sharpness, if not use 1 point in usm in paint shop)

Color standard, tone low

M size

EV minus 1/3

DR 400

Peter, you don't need NR High in base ISO. And M Size | DR 400 won't give you maximum detail but Dynamic Range. We want to make life easier for Nighty so he won't post that lousy EXR ruler again lol.

Joms, try shooting at low iso with the NR high. You will like it ! The photo looks smoother without loss of detail, like shooting film. btw it's a mistake to think L size will give you more detail, like NR kills fine detail and I do need the DR 400 for a balanced photo, so RAW is not an option for me. My suggestion: try it.
