I have used a variety of pro Canon and Nikon camers with their 24mm primes and often had problems with a lack of sharp focus. The individual aspects of the image are much smaller with a wide angle lens and so the areas of contrast differentiation needed for the autofocus is often not going to hit the individual AF sensors. Using a camera setting that uses both the selected AF sensor and the other AF sensors around the main sensor will greatly improve the AF accuracy and speed in real world situations.

It is not a limitation of the D800 but of the DSLR AF system when used with a wide angle lens. There is a reason why cameras have multiple AF settings and configurations. Good idea to read the manual and the Nikon Technical Guide for the D3 as it applies equally to the AF for all the "pro" cameras that followed. You can download the PDF from nikonusa.com.
