I agree with the general conclusions here, but with a tripod and a very long exposure you can get something with a Hoya RM-72, at least with a NEX-5N. Here is an example:

I borrowed the filter and certainly would not purchase one as I intend to convert my NEX-3.

That turned out pretty well. I have an IR filter I used on another camera, so I don't have the right filter rings, but when I tested, it looked very red and not as IR as I'd like (even if I converted ). On the other hand, I have another camera I can use for IR if desired. So, yeah, I think it's not ideal to use an unmodified Nex, but it's hard to justify dedicating a camera...
