It's all a matter of personal preferences. I, for one, like to crop my images in order to show only what's essential. Some times, surrounding is essential: other times, it's a distraction.

On a huge display, a picture might be too close (like the one below). But the same image on an iPhone might just be right. So we have to take into account that our work will be displayed on very different monitors.
