I don't think much, if any, robustness needs to be sacrificed to shorten the travel distance of the pins. The bayonet mounting arrangement would not be affected either. From what I can gather (courtesy of Wikipedia), Canon's breech mount on their FD lenses was mainly to accommodate the mechanical aperture linkage, and had nothing to do with the electrical contacts (I don't think the FD mount even had any electrical contacts). Notice that they've gone bayonet with the electronic EF mount.
The FD mount didn't have any electrical contacts. The EF mount is a bayonet, with physically robust connections, but Canon also increased the diameter from 48mm for the FD mount to 54mm, so they didn't have to worry about the room for pins. The Nikon F-mount remained at 44mm.
Sorry to ask for clarification here but I need some. What "stealth" feature is used with the f/1.2 lenses that's not used with other lenses?
I'm sorry I'm not communicating more clearly. I'm positing a hypothetical -- that if Nikon were to release f/1.2 lenses, such lenses would come after Nikon released cameras with such a feature to support them. I've seen no evidence of such a feature on my D800.
FWIW, if I lost the ability to toss an uncapped f/1.2 lens into my bag I don't think I'd be that distraught. I don't do that with any of my current lenses.
Suffice it to say that the professionals I've known are far harder on gear than I am, which is one of the reasons people talk about build quality in forums like this one.
