The camera does not have a full stroke aperture measuring tab, instead it only has the "MAX APERTURE SET" switch for using AF-D lenses locked at F22. Without a full range aperture tab the camera has no way to know what aperture your lens is without a computer chip on the lens. So it cannot read the aperture to meter. Also if your lens is a pre-AI model it could damage the aperture switch because the aperture ring isn't notched like newer AI and later lenses to clear it.
