I personally find 16-50 to be sharper, even at f/4 where the 35/1.8 should be optimally sharp (whereas 16-50 should be expected to be at its best at f/5.6). I pick the 35/1.8 over the 16-50/2.8 when lighter weight and low light are a consideration.

Obviously, it doesn't hurt to have both, but I do find the 35/1.8 a useful companion to my 18-250 travel zoom (and usually have it on my NEX more than on my A55). As a side note, I've noticed that the 35/1.8 can get you cat-eye bokeh balls rather easily, if one likes that.
