The 18-55 has a 76 degree angle of view compared to 83 degrees for the 16mm.

The 16mm can be bought cheap, and is said to be hit or miss in terms of quality. You can probably pick one up on ebay for $100 - $150. For that price it is pretty darn good. The benefit over the 18-55 at 18mm is the slightly larger angle of view, the larger aperture, the smaller size, and the ability to throw the fish-eye adapter on it. You do lose OSS though, but no other low range low cost option has OSS either (other than 18mm on your 18-55).

A good alternative to this might be the sigma 19mm which has a smaller angle of view (73.5 degrees) than the 18mm on your kit, but is much sharper all around. You can pick this up for $99 or so right now. No OSS on this.

For portraits I have the 50mm 1.8, and I love it. It is great for portraits without having to get in someones face. The 1.8 aperture lets me shoot indoors more often which is good for me since I am mostly shooting family pics. You should be able to pick this up for $275 or less.

If you want a really wide angle, and don't mind manual controls I hear the Rokinon 8mm fish eye is awesome, and it runs around $300.

So for your budget I would probably do the following:

$100 Sony 16mm f2.8

$275 Sony 50mm f1.8

$375 total (not counting taxes or shipping)

If you can spare an extra $300 on top of that I would pick up the rokinon 8mm, or if you think you are going to be taking shots of well lit (e.g. outdoor during the day) sports you may want to check out the Sony 55-210 since it has the auto-focus, and OSS, and the nice 210mm focal length.

If you want something in the middle of 8mm and 50mm I would probably do theĀ $100 Sigma 30mm f2.8 before the $450 35mm f1.8 from Sony, mostly because it fits your budget better.

I am willing to bet the Sony is the better lens in the long run with OSS, PDAF, etc... but for $100 that 30mm from sigma is a great deal.

Hope that helps
