I have the same difficulty. I understand the concept -- I worked on projects 20 years ago which improved signal-to-noise by rapid processing of field-sequential images.

But has anone said how this is superior to using good noise-reduction software? I took the original image posted above and did some judicious (I emphasize judicious) noise-reduction (result below). I can't see that the stacking produces a better result. I know that noise-reduction software is often misused, but it can work very well.

Now maybe I'm just missing the point or giving in to the NR software claims, but since it handles both luminance and chroma noise, it would seem to be superior.

Comments?

Hi Darrell,

No desire to argue over anything and yep your NR example certainly improves the noise situ while keeping things nice and sharp... but I personally can't understand how you can say the stacking isn't less noisy (for now I will assume this is what is being discussed as that is what I was impressed by ).  Now I will say that it obviously depends on the user - if the results aren't someone's cup of tea then that's totally cool by me!  Everyone should do what suits them and their workflow.

But to example the effectiveness of stacking (with no additional colour/contrast/noise/etc tweaking) here they are side by side including your NR sample in the middle. Which do you think is the best result?

Now that is using what was already a nice section of an already decent image as far as noise goes (in my humble opinion!)

Here is an example from a much noisier 100% crop of a 400iso pic:

and the stacked version:

For me not having to faff around with sliders and noise and sharpening etc is a nicer workflow - but I am working on a low quantity of images so the little extra time spent is no worries.

At the end of the day this is simply interesting and cool for those who will enjoy it - if it's not something you're honestly fussed with no worries

Have fun and keep rockin!
