You're free to apply whatever method works for you, or course. My experience is that subjects do not want to see what they looked like, they want to see what they think they looked like.
Frankly I think I'd be lynched if I just handed people accurate colour reproductions of their facial portraits. Why else do we have to smooth wrinkles and blemishes a little ?
