Manual iris control for the Nikkor 80-200 AF

Hey everybody! I just purchased a used and well loved 80-200 AF (the two touch version) and am having a slightly unique problem. I have seen threads on here about losing the ability to control the aperture from the camera and I want to know how to make that happen on purpose. Every time I try to use the ring to change the f Stop number an error comes up saying "set on maximum aperture". My other three lenses are all Carl Zeiss f primes where I control the aperture right on the collar so I am used to that and generally prefer being able to control everything manually. Is there a way to bypass the electronics? A setting I need to change? A way to just not have that message show up? Thank you in advance for the help, I have looked extensively on several places I believed would have the information but they did not.
