It does not need to be like this. Cameras are not priced by the pixel (D800). With the m-RAW option, you could store the shots in lower size "RAW"s on the card. This could hurt the burst rate, indeed.

Sure only if others are the same - burst rate, cost and have options to generate small RAW etc.  Otherwise I'd pickup a 20-24mp 8fps over a 46mp 5fps in any day on my needs.  But in reality the others are never the same.

Here are the situations now.  You hear someone in Canon camp wants a D800-like high pixel small-body camera 39/46mp 5DX costs around $3K.  You hear someone in Nikon camp wants a 5D3-like fast small-body camera 24mp D700X costs around $2500-3000.  The reality is that someone doesn't get exactly he/she wanted unless dump all gear and switch side.  Nikon and Canon are working on to release $7K D4X and 1DsX respectively that is not exactly someone wanted.
