Have a look at Joe McNally's work with flash.

Pick up Joe's book "The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes".

Then it might start to make more sense.  In "The Hot Shoe Diaries", Joe diagrams and describes in detail how he shoots with 1, 2, 3 and more flashes.  Some of the effects he creates are astounding and beautiful.

Hey guys

i'm learning photography and something that i've never been able fully grasp is why do good photographers often use their powerful flashes when the light is already quite good.

Does the flashlight provide better results for portraits etc instead of the available light?

In my own very limited experience i have found that the flash often gives off an unnatural light

What am i missing here?

Cheers
