What is the benefit of APS-C over 4/3

So: Sensor size generally matters, the larger the sensor, the more subtle the transition from sharp to unsharp will look. That is visible and adds to the esthetics of the shots. At least in my own practical experience.

Sounds very much like an article of faith to me. Is there any science behind it?
