Thanks for the link YuriS, that visual really helped makes things a little clearer.

Based on your responses and what I've read on the aforementioned link it looks like the new Sigma 60mm 2.8 has some potential. (I'm trying to be as cost conscious as I can which I why I keep bringing up the Sigmas).

Would a 60 be too much tele to be a good lens for walking around and snapping shots at a family gathering or a convention? I guess I'm hoping there is a magical prime lens that would work for that and portraits, but if I have to go with one for portraits and one for wide shots I'll have to do so.

Hi! it may depend on what exactly you want to shoot. If It will be people or group of people – it will be nice. Even shoulder portrait will look fine. I like to use 50mm and 85mm Minolta MD for this purpose. Open wide it sharp and soft enough for portraitures. Especially 85mm. Following pictures taken with Minolta MD Rokkor-X 85mm f2.0.

Glance, Minolta MD Rokkor-X 85mm f2.0. Iso100, F2.0, 1/320s

Kids, Minolta MD Rokkor-X 85mm f2.0. ISO100, f2.0, 1/400s
