...no need to buy more just to get better AF. I have another camera (non-Sigma) that I use every day because it has none of these problems.

Are you sure, your SD1 is ok? I have no issues with any of my lenses. (17-50mm, 8-16mm, 70mm, 150mm, 120-300mm) AF is fast and accurate.
Maybe quality control was just better with the original, expensive SD1? ;))
