Re: 7D Jpg and 7D Raw the Same? - Is it nearly the same?

He may have "demonstrated it with pictures" but as we've been pointing out, he chose a VERY bad subject for those pictures: a photograph of a black and white image on a TV. When his original subject had limited colors AND was on a TV screen, it easily fit within the 8-bit data range of a JPG so RAW format would not have been an advantage. And we can't tell whether the blown highlights were blown because of his exposure or because the original "subject" (the image on his TV) had blown highlights - in the latter case, the information is missing in the subject, so no means of capturing and manipulating the image could restore them.

When someone makes such a bold statement and then supports it with such a poor choice of images, it is hard to believe he understands the issues.

To demonstrate his point, he should have taken something like a scenic shot, making sure to select one with a bright sky and dark shadows (as one of the other posters did) - in such a wide dynamic range image, with a little post processing of a RAW original you could get an image impossible to obtain with a single JPG shot. Now, it might be possible to capture a similar images as a JPG if the camera was set in the extended dynamic range mode, but that substantially slows down shooting and prevents use of ISO 100 - it effectively underexposes by a stop and then boost the shadows so save 1 stop in the highlights. Rather than cripple the performance of the 7D, and add noise to shadows for all shots, most of us prefer to shoot RAW images and do the adjustments ourselves (if needed) in post processing.
