I had it repaired by Sanford Camera Repair, which is a Nikon Authorized Repair Station. I purchased the lens used, so perhaps it suffered some insult by the previous owner, but as far as I can tell I've been pretty gentle with it.

Michael, your 17-35mm "Mr. Squeaky" and my 28-70mm "Mr. Squeaky" must be brothers. I've been wondering if mine could be squeaking because I rarely use it, almost never use it actually. It has been in a Pelican case for years now. I'm wonder if it's worth having it repaired; would you mind sharing how much Nikon charged to fix your AF motor?
