Used to do a lot of stacking with the old fz100, the benefit is that the camera gets a greater number of chances to gather information about the same scene and hence the increase in clarity. The caveat is that the technique also amplifies in camera electronic noise, though I have never found this a problem.

The fz100-150-200 cameras are very suited to the technique because they are very fast, rapidly reeling off frames which minimizes any movement. 16 frames taken at iso100 aligned and stacked not only theoretically gives iso25, the resulting frame looks like it was taken at iso25 even just stacking jpegs.

Here is an old frame resulting from stacking fz100 jpeg images (dont remember how many) using Microsoft Ice to align and stack, this technique extended the capability of the fz100 considerably.
