You know if we compare on equivalence, a beaten-to-death debate recently, a F2.8 lens on mFT is equivalent to F3.5 lens on 1.6x or F3.73 lens on 1.5x. The body difference is largely reflect in mirrorless vs DSLR not on crop format difference. Technically Canon can design a 15-45mm F3.5 zoom for its EOS-M or Sony can design a 16-47mm F3.7 zoom for its NEX with similar size of your E-M5 setup.  Or put on their respective entry-level DSLR that is still much smaller than your 40D combo if we measure on equivalence.
